Vine and wine sector: structure & output
- 1 in 5 farms has a winegrowing/making activity. There are 85,000 of them in France in total (source CNIV)
- France accounts for 11.2% of the world’s winegrowing vineyards* with 789,000 hectares
- In 2023, France produced 4.8 billion litres of wine
- 57% of volumes produced are vinified in individual estate wineries. The remaining 43% are vinified by 1,500 winemaking traders and cooperatives (Source CNIV)

- Provence is the leading producer of rosé wine in France, with 157 million bottles of AOC wine produced in 2022, representing 38% of domestic production and 4.2% of all rosé wine produced worldwide.

- 23,524 estates certified or in the process of qualifying for the ‘high environmental value’ label* (01/01/2024)
*High environmental value certification (HVE in French), instigated by the Grenelle de l’Environnement industry negotiations in France in 2007, indicates the attainment of a level of environmental excellence in four areas: biodiversity (with hedges, grassed strips and copses), input, fertilising and irrigation strategies. It follows specifications overseen by government-approved certifying bodies.
